Design technology. Did I ever do this in primary school? Yes, it was compulsory, but there is very little emphasis even today on this subject in schools.

Much to my surprise, when we were introduced to WHAT DT WAS; it actually covers a lot more than you would expect. For example food, textiles, fashion, buildings etc.

A good way to look at it is Art is something which builds on emotions and experiences. It is a response. On the other hand DT is creating something or designing something for someone to serve a purpose. It is a source of problem solving.

'What do you do with an idea?' Kobi Yamada.

- a key part of DT is evaluation of what you have produced and asking how you can make it better. That is why technology is so rapidly expanding and improving because people are asking these questions.

We were shown a good way to structure a lesson or a series of lessons to accommodate DT.

-product analysis

-designing the product (draw- don't just use worksheets!)

-key skills (logical and lateral thinking... subject knowledge.... use BBC bite size)

-making activity (resources: ASK for everything available free)

-evaluate. --teaching critical evaluation, cross-curriculum but especially DT.

We we need to hook into learning. Something to ENGAGE the children. We need to also CELEBRATE children's work by sharing with parents etc.

Lateral thinkers look look around a problem rather than straight at it. Creativity rather than literally. Are we educating creativity OUT OF children???? Creativity falls dramatically in children as they get older. (Ken Robinson)

how many any uses are there for a paper clip? Can you build a structure out of paper to protect the three little piggies from the big bad wolf? What is the typical way to draw a house?

~~in adults these are all so stereotypical to answer but for a child the possibilities are endless. Creativity needs to be enciuraged the whole way through school so that we do not end up with a society of robots.
