I survived day one! Despite nearly forgetting my nice shoes on the way out the door to catch the bus, my day went kind of unexpectedly smoothly. Kiera (one of the girls I am placed with) and I found the school no bother and actually arrived 15 minutes early. upon arrival we had to sign and hand in our DBS letters to ensure we were who we claimed to be, then were ushered down the hallway into our year 4 classroom which will be our home for the next 7 weeks of practice.
Trinity CE / Methodist primary school. Not precisely what I imagined it to be but not far off either. It was nice to see a the whole school assembly first thing which allowed students to be set up for the day with a small talk from a member of the local church which is paired with Trinity school. A worshipful attitude is very much conveyed in the atmosphere of Trinity school and I am looking forward to seeing the environment of Trinity in these next incoming weeks.
day began with MATHS. Having three trainees, two classroom assistants and the teacher there were plenty of adults to go around and help the students with a skills test overview of topics in maths they covered last year.
Something brought immediately to my attention was TS3: subject knowledge. while i am competent in maths I still found myself hesitating over answers and moreover how to explain to the children how to do certain sums without giving away the answer. I also was very aware of the vocabulary I was using and wanted to make sure I as using the correct terminology so not to confuse the children in their maths, or reinforce any misconceptions.
After break was English where I observed a successful lesson on writing a diary entry while also drawing upon the history topic to gauge the cross-curriculum aspect of education. The children were able to confidently write in paragraphs and use flow charts to plan what they were going to write. Teacher also wrote the lesson objective on the handout sheet and on the whiteboard of those individuals which she helped.
PE lesson was also taught by an external teacher. 15 mins of fitness: similar to that of coaching athletics- starting with an easy jog then having a circuit of different activities that the children rotate around. e.g. ladders, zig zag cones, shuttle run, skipping, hurdles. 15 mins skills hockey and ball dribbling and passing. the bean game and traffic lights was cool down.
Much much more to come in the next month or so!
